Iron Ki Kami Aur Baal Girna: Ferritin Explained Simply

Short answer: low iron stores, measured by a blood test called ferritin, are linked with increased hair shedding in women. Iron deficiency is very common in Pakistan, especially after periods, pregnancy and delivery. If you're asking "baal girna kaise roke" and you also feel tired, breathless or pale, ask your doctor for a CBC and ferritin test. Only take iron supplements based on your results and your doctor's advice.

Iron, haemoglobin and ferritin: the difference

  • Haemoglobin (Hb) is the iron-containing protein in red blood cells. A low Hb means anaemia.
  • Ferritin reflects your body's iron stores. Ferritin can be low even when your haemoglobin is still normal. Many women with hair shedding fall into this group.

Think of ferritin as your iron savings account, and haemoglobin as the money you're spending today. Your body protects haemoglobin first. When stores run low, less essential processes, including hair growth, may suffer.

Why it's so common in Pakistani women

  • Monthly periods, especially heavy periods
  • Pregnancy and delivery, often close together
  • Diets low in iron-rich foods, or meals where tea (chai) is drunk alongside, which reduces absorption
  • Intestinal worms or digestive conditions in some cases

Symptoms besides hair fall

  • Tiredness, low energy
  • Breathlessness on stairs
  • Pale skin or pale inner eyelids
  • Brittle or spoon-shaped nails
  • Cravings for ice, mitti (soil) or chalk (pica)
  • Restless legs at night
  • Feeling cold

You can have low ferritin with none of these symptoms, which is why a test is helpful.

Which tests to ask for

  1. CBC (complete blood count): shows your haemoglobin and red cell size.
  2. Serum ferritin: shows your stores. Note that ferritin can be falsely normal during an infection or inflammation.
  3. Sometimes iron studies, along with thyroid (TSH) and vitamin D/B12, since these also affect hair.

Your doctor will interpret the results. Labs use different reference ranges, and the "normal" cut-off isn't always the level that's ideal for hair.

Food first: iron-rich Pakistani foods

TypeExamples
Haem iron (absorbed best)Beef, mutton, kaleji (liver), chicken, fish, eggs
Plant ironDaal, chana, lobia, rajma, palak, saag, methi, dates, jaggery (gur)
Helpers (vitamin C)Lemon, oranges, guava, tomatoes, amrood, green chillies
Blockers (keep separate)Chai, coffee and calcium-rich foods taken at the same meal

Practical tips:

  • Squeeze lemon over daal and saag.
  • Have chai an hour or so after meals rather than with them.
  • Include some protein at every meal, since hair is made of protein.

Supplements: do it safely

  • Test first. Too much iron is harmful, and some conditions cause iron overload.
  • Take the dose your doctor prescribes. Iron tablets can cause constipation, nausea or dark stools.
  • Taking iron with vitamin C, and away from tea and calcium, improves absorption.
  • Keep iron tablets away from children. Overdose is dangerous.
  • If tablets don't suit you, your doctor may suggest another form.

How long until hair improves?

Iron stores rise slowly, usually over several weeks to months. Hair shedding typically calms down after your stores recover, and new growth shows a few months after that. Expect a timeline of three to six months or more. Hair grows slowly, so patience is part of the treatment.

Iron is often only part of the story

Women often have more than one cause at once: low ferritin and postpartum shedding, or low ferritin and PCOS, or low ferritin and thyroid problems. If shedding continues once iron is corrected, look at the other causes. See why ladies' hair falls.

Heavy periods

If your periods are very heavy (soaking pads hourly, passing large clots, or lasting more than seven days), tell your doctor. Fixing the cause of the blood loss is as important as taking iron.

Quick answers

Can I just eat more palak instead of taking tablets? Food helps keep iron levels up, but if your stores are very low, diet alone may take a long time. Your doctor will advise whether you need supplements.

Should my daughter get tested too? Teenage girls who have started their periods are also at risk of low iron, especially if they eat little meat or have heavy periods. Ask your doctor if she is tired or shedding.

Does iron make you gain weight? No. Iron tablets don't cause weight gain.

See a doctor if…

  • You have hair fall along with tiredness, breathlessness or pale skin
  • Your periods are heavy or very frequent
  • You're pregnant or planning pregnancy
  • You've taken iron for months with no improvement
  • You notice blood in your stools or black stools while you're not taking iron

Bottom line

Iron ki kami is one of the most common, and most fixable, reasons for hair fall in Pakistani women. Get a CBC and ferritin test, improve iron-rich foods (with lemon, not chai), take supplements only as prescribed, and give your hair a few months to respond.
